They tried to create the elixir of life and manage to transform iron ore into gold. Today's chemistry mainly works with molecules, combinations, reactions which occur between substances, and changes of energy that happen during those processes. Another purpose of this modern science is to determine the laws which may describe the relations and phenomena in chemical reactions. It may help to create the needed matters artificially. Chemistry interacts quite closely with biology and physics.
